PBS has called for oil royalty review since 1985 – Jahid

Jahid Jahim
KOTA KINABALU: Calling for review of the five percent oil royalty for Sabah is something Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) has been doing since 1985, according to Datuk Jahid Jahim.

The PBS Youth chief said he believes that other Sabah leaders have also made plans to discuss the issue with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“I am hopeful that the discussion can be made smoother with the good relationship between the state and federal governments,” he said, adding that the relationship is further strengthened by Najib’s willingness to listen to the rakyat’s voices.

Jahid, who is also Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports, was commenting on the recent report that Sarawak state leaders from both sides of the political divide had reached a common ground on the need to discuss with the federal government the need to review the oil royalty paid to the state in the past four decades.

Land Development Minister Tan Sri Dr James Masing suggested that the review on oil royalties for Terengganu and Kelantan by a special committee to be set up by the Federal Government should also include Sabah and Sarawak as both states are the main contributors to the national petroleum production.

Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah opined that since petroleum production had increased due to technological advancement, it was logical that the royalty to the state be reviewed.
